Homemade Apple Butter

No canning necessary! The fall season brings in fresh apples. What is a more perfect way to enjoy them other than making a batch of homemade apple butter?! Sweet, spicy, and tangy, this apple butter packs in old-fashioned flavor to eat on toast, biscuits, or however you want to eat it!

Growing up, my friends LOVED apple butter. When we went to a restaurant on trips, they always ordered it. As I’ve gotten older, the hype makes so much more sense. I love to eat this apple butter on a simple piece of toast with some butter. It’s so good!

Why You’ll Love It

  • Old-fashioned flavor you can’t get from a mix

  • Made with simple and wholesome everyday ingredients

  • Cozy and flavorful with warm spices

What You Need

4 pounds assorted apples, peeled and chopped (I used 2 lbs green apples, & 2lbs gala apples)

2 cups apple cider

1 cup packed light brown sugar (buy it in bulk here)

Kosher salt (my favorite brand it Morton’s)

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (the real stuff, like this)

How You’ll Do It

  1. Combine the apples, apple cider, brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large ovenproof pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, partially cover and cook until the apples are soft, about 20 minutes.

  2. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice, cinnamon, vanilla and cloves. (This helps these ingredients from burning) Purée the mixture in a blender in batches until smooth (or I use an immersion blender).

  3. Return the mixture to the pot and bake, uncovered, stirring every 30 minutes, until thickened and deep amber, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours (the timing will depend on the kind of apples you use).

  4. Remove from the oven and let cool completely, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate up to 5 days
